Did you see us on Channel 4 on Monday 25th November at 11am? “Beat my Build” followed the full renovation of a terraced house in Ipswich.
The property renovation TV show follows two developers working on their projects and the one who makes the most profit wins £5000. Filming started in December 2013 and went on throughout the “Build”.
My competitior’s property was a one bedroom flat in South Norwood, London that required minor internal works.
Mine was a run down Victorian terrace that required the full works – damp proofing, internal reconfiguration, rewire, new kitchen, new bathroom, plastering and decorating throughout, full garden landscaping……so you may say that the odds were stacked against me from the outset!
However, the show demonstrated the standard of our work, and our ability to complete a full refurbishment on a tight budget and within a strict timeframe, even in freezing conditions.
Amanda Lamb was the presenter of our episode. She was great (in more ways than one as she was heavily pregnant by the end of filming!) Amanda obviously has a lot of experience in property and was impressed with what we had done with the house. She is a natural in front of the camera and did her best to put me at ease!
The film crew were lovely: incredibly friendly and hard working – it certainly was an insight into all the work that goes in to just 46 minutes of TV!
To be honest I was amazed at the amount of footage that was actually filmed and how little was actually included in the programme. I would find that really frustrating – at least I know none of my hard work goes to waste.
Lion TV produced the series and are were based in Scotland so they had to trek all around the country from Scotland whilst filming the various projects.
The crew were on site in all weathers. Initially there was no useable toilet at the property, so the female “cameragirl” Bethan, and I had to take frequent trips to Dance East at the Ipswich waterfront for comfort breaks.
This was also a great excuse to browse in “Cake and Catwalk” whilst warming up!
My thanks go to Adam Harvey, my wonderful builder and our brilliant team of electricians, plumbers, plasteres, tilers, surveyors, carpenters, painters and decorators. Also thanks to my friends and family, including my boys and their friends, for all their hard graft and investment in both me and the project. I couldn’t have done it without you.
We may not have won the £5000 but we certainly won the day! Our finished project was far superior!! We sold ours before we’d even finished it……..and hers is still on the market six months later – say no more!!
